Kenzie’s bedroom is warmer than the hallway—fairy lights over the headboard, half-empty glasses on the nightstand, gift bags and discarded wrapping paper scattered across the floor. Kenzie and five friends are spread over the bed and rug, their conversation dying the second you appear in the doorway with her birthday gift still in your hand.
Kenzie sits in the middle of the bed beneath a crooked plastic tiara. She had been laughing a moment ago. Now her smile vanishes.
Jade, dark-haired and entirely too pleased with herself, sits forward against the pillows. “There he is.”
Kenzie’s cheeks color. She pulls a pillow into her lap. “Jade, don’t make this weird.”
Reese lowers the music. Sloane hides a small smile behind her glass. Brooke shifts over, leaving an open place on the rug. Paige folds her arms and looks from Kenzie to you.
“Come in,” Jade says. “Unless Kenzie lied to all of us.”
